The objectives of Pioneer Catchment & Landcare Group Inc. is to promote the planned and sustainable management of the catchments of the Pioneer River and the coastal streams by:

•  Fostering coordination between landholder, community groups and government agencies in their land, water and vegetation management activities;
• Promotion of community and government understanding of the interactions between land usage, waters, soils, vegetation and wildlife of the catchment;
• Promotion of the value of a coordinated catchment wide approach for managing these resource;
•  Identification and prioritisation of interrelated land and water resource issues in the catchment;
• Promotion of solutions and actions through public and government participation as part of catchment management strategies;
• Provision of a forum for community and government discussions on catchment management issues for resolving conflicting demands on natural resources;
• Encouraging and promoting sustainable agricultural practices;
• Encouraging the conservation of native flora and fauna for the benefit of the countryside and the community.

Involvement in Regional Projects

Pioneer Catchment & Landcare Group Inc. (formerly Pioneer Integrated Catchment Management Association, PICMA) was involved with the establishment of the regional natural resource management (NRM) group, which started out as the Mackay Whitsunday Regional Strategy Group, now Reef Catchments Mackay Whitsunday Isaac Limited.  PCL has strong ties and significant input into the regional group.  PICMA chair Clive Rogers was the original chair of the regional group, and PICMA’s next chair was the regional group’s Treasurer.  The three ICM groups (Whitsunday Catchment Landcare & Sarina Landcare Catchment Management Association) were an essential part of the regional group as it grew from not even having a bank account until it was handling millions of dollars and delivering significant regional programs, guided by a Regional NRM Plan.

 PCL’s current involvements in regional projects and groups, includes:

• Reef Catchments Mackay Whitsunday Isaac projects (E.g. Coastal Projects Steering Group, Fire mapping, Water Quality Improvement Plan);
• Mackay Regional Pest Management Group; and
• Natural Environment Advisory Committee (overseeing distribution of funds gathered through Natural Environment Levy collected by Mackay Regional Council).
